Alpine skiing in the Dolomites

In winter, we often have the honour of welcoming many Alpine skiers and snow-shoe walkers (including Deutscher Alpenverein, Globo Alpin, Alpenverein Edelweiss Österreich, SAC am Albis, etc.).

Starting from Lake Braies, steep walks, sometimes very demanding, will take you to tops with extremely beautiful views, such as Croda Rossa Piccada, Croda del Becco, Cima Cadin di Sennes, or Col de Riciogogn. On the other side, starting from Prato Piazza it is possible to reach the Villandro Peak, Helltaler Schlechten (Crepe di Val Chiara), the Rossalm Alm, or Giovo Grande and Giovo Piccolo.

With the bus station, just outside the hotel, the Alpine skier does not even need a car to reach the starting points of Ponticello or Lake Braies.

In collaboration with Globo Alpin, Scuola di Alpinismo Val Pusteria, or Almenrausch.at, it is possible to book Alpine skiing tours with professional guides. We will also happily adapt the breakfast times to help our important Alpine skiers (if you wish, you can have your breakfast as early as 06.00 a.m.).

Mountains in winterWinter excursion

We recommend:

Dürrenstein (2,839 m)

From the north an imposing rocky formation, from the south a well-known and appreciated skiing-Alpine excursion location.

Level difference: 848 m
Exposure: S
Difficulty level:
Time for returning to the top: 3 hours
Equipment: standard skiing-Alpine equipment
Starting point: Prato Piazza car park, 1,991 m

Climb: from the car park, we reach the Prato Piazza Hut. From there we go east for approx. 1.5 km, and then continue north to the edge of the forest. It is also possible to go up diagonally from the car park, along a field, through the flat valley. When continuing along the imposing south side, in good visibility conditions there is no problem in finding the way. However, reduced visibility could lead to difficulties. After a slope covered with dead twigs, we reach a steep valley on the left side, just below the ridge that takes to the fore summit. From here, we go on foot through a fork and a crest, reaching the top in a few minutes.

Descent: Following the same route in reverse. Even if the southern slopes offer many alternative routes.

Kleine Gaisl (2,859 m)

Demanding alpine skiing excursion at the feet of the majestic Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo.

Level difference: 1,316 m
Exposure: NW
Difficulty level:
Time for returning to the top: 4 ½ hours
Equipment: standard Alpine skiing equipment
Starting point: Lake Braies, 1,494 m

Climb: if conditions allow, from the Lake Braies hotel we cross the icy lake surface. Otherwise, we follow the forest road on the west side, on the bottom bank of the water expanse. We continue south/south-west on an increasing steep path, going through a narrow canyon between Croda del Becco and Giavo Grande, to "Nagibes Lock" (Buco del Giovo), until we reach "Seabl" (Lake Giovo), and then return on flat soil. We continue further south/south-west, reaching Forcella Cocodain. We then continue further, slightly downhill, towards a steep northern slope, which can only be tackled in safe conditions. After this, we reach the wide ridge at the feet of Remeda Rosses, along which a moderate climb takes us to the top.

Descent: Following the same route in reverse.
